Libya Revolution Still Could Go Very Wrong

Gadaffi hasn’t been officially deposed yet, but clearly he has become irrelevant. The revolution is a success. This leaves the new leadership in the position of showing the world the direction they will take.

Will they go the direction of the successful revolution in South Africa with a policy of trying only the actual monsters and forgiving the rest as long as they engage in a public admission of their sins, followed by a policy of inclusion, or will it collapse into a power struggle where the only solution anyone wants is for their tribe or faction to achieve total domination, including the subjugation or even genocide of any group opposing them.

Egypt is a more civilized country than Libya, and yet its revolution hasn’t yielded a democratic govenment yet. A vote is scheduled, but the military is already showing signs of not wanting to be under the control of a civilian government. If they can’t achieve democracy in Egypt (and I’m not asserting that they can’t), what hope is there for Libya?
